Kitchen gear
- Mixing bowl and whisk
- Pepper mill set to coarse
Method
-
Whisk the mayonnaise and ketchup together in a bowl until the color is an even salmon pink.
-
Add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, black pepper and salt and whisk until fully combined.
-
Taste on a piece of plain chicken or a fry rather than off the spoon, and add more pepper if you want more bite.
-
Cover and refrigerate overnight, or at least 4 hours, so the pepper softens and spreads through the sauce.
-
Stir well and spoon into small cups for dipping.
Tips for a closer clone
- Grind the pepper coarse: fine pepper disappears and leaves the sauce flat and gray.
- Measure the ketchup level, not heaped; too much and it drifts toward a burger sauce.
- Freshly made it tastes mostly of mayonnaise; the overnight rest is what makes it.
- Serve with crispy chicken tenders, crinkle-cut fries and thick buttered toast.

About this dupe
UK and US
All five flavor ingredients are standard in both countries. In the UK, use a plain mayonnaise, not salad cream, which is sharper and thinner and changes the balance.
vs the original
On the menu in the US (menu status reviewed Oct 14, 2026). The chain has announced its first UK restaurant, on Coventry Street in London, for late 2026; when we last checked there was no opening date (Restaurant Online). One serving here is 3 tablespoons (about 1.5 fl oz), our estimate of one restaurant dipping cup.
What it costs: ingredient costs are estimates for the amount used, from supermarket listing prices checked on Oct 14, 2026 (Target.com in the US, Trolley.co.uk for UK supermarkets). Prices vary by store and week.
