Copycat McDonald’s Big Mac Sauce: US and UK Recipe

McDonald’s Big Mac Sauce

Inspired by McDonald’s Big Mac Sauce Not the official recipe

A creamy, tangy, faintly sweet sauce in the style of the one on the Big Mac, stirred together from jars you probably already own. Ten minutes of mixing, then a night in the fridge does the rest.

Kitchen gear

  • Mixing bowl and whisk
  • Jar with a lid

Method

  1. Spoon the mayonnaise into a bowl and stir in the relish, mustard, ketchup and vinegar until evenly blended.

  2. Sprinkle in the sugar, onion powder, garlic powder and paprika, then whisk until there are no dry streaks and the sauce is a pale peachy orange.

  3. Taste and adjust: a few drops more vinegar for tang, or a pinch more sugar if you used chopped gherkins instead of sweet relish.

  4. Scrape into a jar, cover and chill for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight, so the dried onion and garlic soften and the flavors meld.

    2 hr
  5. Stir before serving. Keep it covered in the fridge and use it within a few days.

Tips for a closer clone

  • Give it the full night in the fridge: straight after mixing, the onion powder tastes raw and gritty.
  • Chop the relish even finer than it comes in the jar; big pieces make the sauce lumpy on a burger.
  • Build the color with paprika a pinch at a time rather than adding more ketchup, which pushes it toward a sweeter burger sauce.
  • For the full stack, spread it on the middle and top layers of a double cheeseburger with shredded lettuce and diced onion.

About this dupe

UK and US

Everything here is sold on both sides of the Atlantic. Sweet pickle relish is the one jar that is harder to find in British supermarkets: chop gherkins very finely and add an extra half teaspoon of sugar. Use mild American-style yellow mustard, not English mustard, which is far hotter.

vs the original

The sauce comes on the Big Mac, which is on the menu in both the US and the UK (menu status reviewed Oct 14, 2026). It is not a regular stand-alone menu item, so there is no restaurant price to compare and we do not show a savings line.

What it costs: ingredient costs are estimates for the amount used, from supermarket listing prices checked on Oct 14, 2026 (Target.com in the US, Trolley.co.uk for UK supermarkets). Prices vary by store and week.
