Kitchen gear

  • Heavy skillet or flat griddle
  • Wide spatula

Method

  1. Mash the softened butter with the grated garlic, garlic powder, onion powder and parsley until smooth and evenly speckled.

  2. Spread a generous layer of the garlic butter right to the edges on one side of each slice, and a thin layer on the other side.

  3. Heat a heavy skillet or griddle over medium heat for 2 minutes. Lay the slices in it with the thickly buttered side down.

  4. Toast for 2 to 3 minutes without moving them, pressing lightly once with a spatula, until that side is deep golden and crisp.

    3 min
  5. Flip and toast the thin side for about 1 minute, just long enough to warm through and color lightly, so the middle stays soft. Serve hot.

    1 min

Tips for a closer clone

  • Keep the heat at medium: on high the garlic scorches and turns bitter before the bread crisps.
  • Butter right to the crusts so the edges brown as evenly as the middle.
  • Cooking a crowd? Toast the slices on a sheet pan under the broiler (the grill in the UK), watching closely.
  • Serve it next to chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries and a pot of peppery dipping sauce.

About this dupe

UK and US

Texas toast bread is not sold in British supermarkets, but two things get very close. The easiest is a thick toastie loaf such as Warburtons Super Toastie, which is already cut close to Texas toast thickness. Better still, buy an unsliced white tin loaf or bloomer and cut slices about 2 cm thick yourself. Avoid sourdough, which is too chewy, and brioche, whose sugar burns before the slice is crisp. Use salted block butter, not a spreadable blend: the oil in spreadables makes the toast greasy rather than crisp. Garlic granules stand in for garlic powder.

vs the original

On the menu in the US (menu status reviewed Oct 14, 2026). The chain has announced its first UK restaurant, on Coventry Street in London, for late 2026; when we last checked there was no opening date (Restaurant Online). One serving is one slice, the way it comes in a box.

What it costs: ingredient costs are estimates for the amount used, from supermarket listing prices checked on Oct 15, 2026 (Target.com in the US, Trolley.co.uk for UK supermarkets). Prices vary by store and week.
