Method
-
Rub the parsley and dill between your fingers as you drop them into a mixing bowl, to wake up the dried herbs.
-
Add the garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and salt, then the mayonnaise and sour cream. Whisk until completely smooth.
-
Whisk in the buttermilk a little at a time, then the lemon juice. Stop when the dip falls from the whisk in a thick ribbon; it firms up in the fridge.
-
Cover and chill so the herbs soften and the flavors even out.
-
Stir, taste and adjust with a pinch of salt or a few more drops of lemon. Serve cold with wings, fries or vegetable sticks.
Tips for a closer clone
- Do not skip the chill: straight after mixing it tastes of raw garlic powder and the herbs are still papery.
- For a looser dip, add more buttermilk a tablespoon at a time; for a thicker one, add a spoonful of sour cream.
- In the US, a 1 oz packet of dry ranch seasoning can replace the herbs, granules, salt and pepper.
- Keep it covered in the fridge and use it within a few days.

About this dupe
UK and US: most copycat versions lean on a US packet of ranch seasoning, which is hard to find in British supermarkets. This one builds the seasoning from dried herbs and granules sold in both countries. Soured cream is the UK name for sour cream, and cultured buttermilk is in the dairy aisle.
Made fresh: Tasting Table reports that Wingstop restaurants make their ranch in-store instead of shipping it in, which is why a fresh homemade batch gets closer than a bottled dressing.
