Kitchen gear

  • Rolling pin
  • 9 x 13 in (23 x 33 cm) baking pan
  • Stand mixer with dough hook, optional

Method

  1. Whisk the flour, sugar, yeast and salt in a large bowl. Add the warm milk (110°F / 43°C), melted butter and egg, and stir into a shaggy dough.

  2. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes by hand (about 4 minutes with a dough hook) until smooth and slightly tacky. Cover and leave in a warm spot until doubled, about 1 hour.

    1 hr
  3. Mash the soft butter, brown sugar and cinnamon into a smooth paste.

  4. Press the air out of the dough and roll it on a lightly floured surface into a 16 x 10 in (40 x 25 cm) rectangle, about ⅛ in (3 mm) thick. Spread the filling right to the edges, leaving a ½ in (1 cm) strip bare along one long side.

  5. Roll the dough up tightly from the other long side and pinch the seam closed. Cut the log in half, cut each half in half again, then cut each quarter into 6 slices, for 24 minis.

  6. Arrange the slices cut side up in a greased 9 x 13 in (23 x 33 cm) pan, in 4 rows of 6. Cover and let them rise until puffy and touching, about 30 minutes. Heat the oven to 350°F (180°C) meanwhile.

    30 min
  7. Bake for 14 to 16 minutes, until golden on top and the centers spring back when pressed.

    15 min
  8. Whisk the powdered sugar, milk, melted butter and vanilla until smooth and thick enough to coat a spoon, adding milk a teaspoon at a time if needed. Serve the minis warm, four to a portion, with the icing on the side for dipping.

Tips for a closer clone

  • Milk hotter than 120°F (49°C) can kill the yeast. It should feel just warm on the inside of your wrist.
  • Slice the log with unflavored dental floss or a sharp serrated knife, so the swirl stays round.
  • Roll the dough thin and wide. A thicker sheet gives regular-size cinnamon rolls instead of minis.
  • Make ahead: after slicing, cover the pan and refrigerate overnight, then leave it at room temperature for 45 minutes before baking.
  • Keep the icing thick enough for dipping; a runny icing soaks into the rolls instead of coating them.

About this dupe

UK and US: Cini Minis were a US Burger King item, but everything here is in UK supermarkets: plain flour, fast-action dried yeast, light brown soft sugar and icing sugar. Grams are given for the baking ingredients, so you can weigh instead of using cups.

vs the original: Burger King sold Cini Minis, bite-size cinnamon rolls, on its US breakfast menu until around 2012 (one account says 2016), and brought them back for a limited time from August 26, 2025, as Food Network reported at the time. They are not on the regular menu, so for now homemade is the way to have them.
